Hi, I’m Emily.
I’m a musician, artist, and organizer. You can hire me to illustrate something or buy prints and other products I’ve made at Black Gum Print Shop. I host The Unquiet Grave on WRIR 97.3 Richmond Independent Radio, “dissecting heavy metal piece by piece” every first and third Sunday night from 9-11pm.
I make music by myself now after a long time playing in bands. I sing and play guitar, bass, banjo, hammered dulcimer, and some keyboards/synths (I love the Yamaha DX-7). My musical background is in old time/traditional music, metal, punk, and experimental music. In 2019, I trained and obtained my certification in Deep Listening, the sound practice pioneered by Pauline Oliveros, with the Center for Deep Listening at Rensselaer. I sometimes lead deep listening workshops.
I love the woods and have a B.S. in Forestry from the University of Tennessee. Living a cramped-up city life right now, but hoping to move closer to the country soon.
My full time job is being Systems Advocacy and Engagement Manager at the Virginia Sexual and Domestic Violence Action Alliance. I’m a member of Richmond For All. I do some anti-pipeline work here and there.
A shortlist of topics I’m interested in: extraction capitalism, Soviet heavy metal, Appalachian history/cookery/folklore/culture, forestry, letterpress printing, acid house/rave culture 1988-1992, monastic history/daily life, and Welsh language/folklore/music.
I love to hear from folks! Send me a note.
